School Support Services is a branch of Child, Youth & School Services (CYSS). The program is responsible for the coordination and assistance of Army school-age youth with educational opportunities and information necessary to achieve academic success. This is accomplished through the work of the School Liaison Officer.

School Support Services LogoThe School Liaison Officer (SLO) serves as the installation subject matter expect for youth education and school transition issues. They inform and advise commanders and parents on student education/transition issues, promote parent involvement in youth education and collaborate with local schools and the installation. Their goal is to provide a wide variety of programs and services that help ensure a “level playing field” for Army youth transitioning among installations and school systems. Their strong partnership with the Department of Education also helps to improve the various Hawaii public schools that military children attend.


Additional Programs, Services And Partners

The School Support Services program provides many additional programs, services, forms and important partnerships in support of military children and youth:

SKIES Unlimited provides a variety of instructional programs designed to complement and support the experiences children and youth have in Army CYSS and in school. SKIES is made up of four schools of instruction: School of Arts, School of Sports, School of Life Skills and School of Academics. HOME SCHOOL SUPPORT GROUP. The CYSS Home School Support Group welcomes all active-military, DoD, and Department of Army dependents to join them for weekly educational activities. The group offers opportunities for youth to participate in computer classes, field trips, art classes, workshops and curriculum meetings. The CYSS Homework Centers and Technology Labs are also available to home school youth by appointment. YOUTH SPONSORSHIP. If you are new to Hawaii and would like to find out more about your new home and school, the Youth Sponsorship Program is for you. We will assign a youth sponsor for you who will help you transition into your new island home. See more

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION. The State of Hawaii Department of Education (DOE) administers 289 public schools (256 regular, 2 special, 31 charter) plus 11 adult education schools on 7 islands. Most of the military children that attend public school in the state are part of the Central Oahu District which is made up of six complexes: Aiea, Moanalua, Radford, Leilehua, Mililani, and Waialua. http://doe.k12.hi.us/

ALOHA, MILITARY FAMILIES AND STUDENTS. Aloha, Military Families and Students (AMFAS) is an excellent resource for military families moving to Hawaii that plan to attend public school. militaryfamily.k12.hi.us/

PARENT TO PARENT. The Parent to Parent program provides informative and interactive parent workshops to groups or organizations in the local community. Participants receive high quality resources and materials which will assist them in their role as their child’s best advocate. OPERATION MILITARY KIDS. The SSS office is a team partner of Operation Military Kids (OMK). OMK collaborates with groups across the state to provide sustainable local support services to military youth, both active duty and Reserve /National Guard, before, during and after their family members are deployed. JOINT VENTURE EDUCATION FORUM. The Joint Venture Education Forum (JVEF) is a cooperative effort between the Department of Defense and the DOE that focuses on the needs of military children in Hawaii’s public schools. STRONG BEGINNINGS. The SSS staff supports the Strong Beginnings initiative that prepares Pre-Kindergarten children for transition into the actual school kindergarten classroom. Child Development Centers can coordinate school visits by contacting the SLO office at Schofield Barracks.

SCHOOL-AGE HOMEWORK CENTERS. The SSS office works closely with the director of each Army School-Age Center (grades K-5) to support the programs Homework Center which serves as an “anchor” for military children-creating a safe and familiar academic support environment before and after school. School-Age Center programs are located at Schofield Barracks, Helemano Military Reservation, Fort Shafter and Aliamanu Military Reservation.

LIVE HOMEWORK HELP called "study strong" is available from Child, Youth & School Services both in the School-Age and Middle School/Teen programs and at home 24 hours a day 7 days a week at Tutor.com/army. Online tutoring services are available in English and Spanish from certified teachers, college professors, professional tutors and graduate students. CYSS PARENTS AS TEACHERS HEROES AT HOME. Parents as Teachers (PAT) Heroes at Home (HAH) is a parent education and family support program for young military families. Certified parent educators provide information, parenting support and encouragement to military parents to help their children learn, grow and develop to realize their full potential. It focuses on supporting parents until their child enters kindergarten.
