DEPLOYMENT GROUP

Dear Parent and Teen
Deployment is a difficult time not only
for the soldier who is away from home but also for the family members at home. Often time teens silently worry about their
soldier/parent because they don’t want to bring added stress to the
family. And stress is a part of being a
family member whose soldier is off fighting for our peace and safety. As a “single” parent and teen during these
times it is sometimes difficult to “take care of business” as usual.
The ASACS program would like to support
you and your family through offering an Adolescent Deployment Group for all
Army kids in the 6th, 7th, and 8th
grades. We are proud of all our soldiers
and would like to give them some peace of mind that their kids will have an
avenue for taking care of their needs as the son/daughter of a deployed parent.
Teens of this age often have mixed
feelings about the deployed parent. One
feeling is that of pride that their parent is fighting for our peace and safety
yet on the other hand another feeling is that of fear/being scared their parent
may not return home. In addition kids
are often confused about what role they need to be playing in their family
during deployment. Kids sometimes begin
seeing themselves as being responsible for becoming an “adult” overnigh,t taking on the
responsibility of the deployed parent. Because they are not ready to be adults
they will sometimes feel like they are letting down their family. This often results in a teen acting out
and/or withdrawing from the family. They
may experience quilt and shame for not being able to meet their perceived role
during this time. Therefore, it’s
important that kids are able to meet with other kids who are facing the same
issues. We are fortunate to be living on
a military base where many more support opportunities will be available to our
kids and their families. During this
time, it is important that we become actively involved in all that the military
community has available.
The ASACS Adolescent Deployment group will be an education/support group for
adolescents at the Middle School age whose sponsor is deployed. Please read our flyer for further information
on the when, where, how, why, activities, and time of our group.
If you would
like to sign up your son/daughter please pick up a parent permission form from
Jeanne Staivisky in room E-7 at
ASACS looks forward to being
able to support your son/daughter through the ASACS Adolescent Deployment
Group.
